Henry Bartle Frere - Wikipedia. Sir Henry Bartle Edward Frere, 1st Baronet. GCBGCSI (2. 9 March 1. He had a successful career in India rising to become Governor of Bombay. However, as High Commissioner for Southern Africa, his attempt to impose a British confederation on the region led to the overthrow of the Cape's first elected government and to a string of regional wars, culminating in the invasion of Zululand and the First Boer War. He was recalled to London to face charges of misconduct and was officially censured for acting recklessly. Early life. His elder sister, Mary Anne Frere, was born circa 1. Clydach, and his younger sister, Frances Anne Frere, was born circa 1. Clydach. He was the grandson of John Frere and a nephew of John Hookham Frere; William Frere; Bartholomew Frere; James Hatley Frere; and Temple Frere . Paddington, Middlesex; and Eliza Frederica Jane Frere, born c. Wimbledon, London. Having passed his language examination, he was appointed assistant collector at Poona (now Pune) in 1. Sir George Arthur, Governor of Bombay. Two years later he became political resident at the court of Raja Shahji of Satara; on the rajah's death in 1. Commissioner in Sindh. In 1. 85. 1 he reformed the Scinde District postal system on the model of the British postal service, to provide better service with Rowland Hill's . This system became the basis for India's postal system, designed to provide public service. In 1. 85. 7, he sent detachments to Multan and to Sir John Lawrence in the Punjab in order to secure those locations during the Indian Mutiny. These services were fully recognized, as he received the thanks of both houses of Parliament and was made a Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB). As the chief commissioner of Sindh, in 1. Frere issued a decree making it compulsory to use Sindhi language in place of Persian in Sindh. The officers of Sindh were ordered to learn Sindhi compulsorily to enable them to carry on day- to- day work efficiently. A committee was constituted (1. Asst. Commissioner & Chief of Education Department, with an equal number of Hindu and Muslim members, which unanimously decided on the use of Persio- Arabic Sindhi script with slight modifications. Frere not only gave Sindhi language one script but he even published different Sindhi books related to various streams of the literature, which encouraged impetus to Sindhi writers to move quickly with literacy. Governor of Bombay. His order to pull down the ramparts of the old Fort allowed the city to grow, and the Flora Fountain was commissioned in his honour. During Frere's administration his daughter, Mary Frere, collected Old Deccan Days (1. English- language field- collected book of Indian folklore. In 1. 86. 7 he returned to England where he was made GCSI, and given honorary degrees from Oxford and Cambridge. In 1. 87. 5 he accompanied the Prince of Wales to Egypt and India, with such success that Lord Beaconsfield asked him to choose between being made a baronet or a Knight Grand Cross of the Bath. He chose the former, but the queen bestowed both honours upon him. High Commissioner for Southern Africa. Frere accepted the position, on a salary double that of his predecessor, and on the understanding that successful implementation of confederation would result in him being appointed the first British Governor- General of a federated southern African dominion. Attempt to federate Southern Africa. It was seen as an easy way of uniting the region under British control, whilst preventing any future attempt among the remaining independent African states to unite against British rule. However an earlier plan by Sir George Grey for a federation of all the various colonies in South Africa had been rejected by the home authorities in 1. Through Frere's elevation, Lord Carnarvon sought another attempt at implementing the ill- fated and locally unsupported confederation scheme, that was met with fierce resistance by all the local groups involved. South Africans resented the perceived high- handed manner in which it was being imposed from London with little accommodation and knowledge of, or concern for, local conditions and politics. Cape Prime Minister, John Molteno, advised that under current conditions confederation was ill- suited to and badly timed for Southern Africa. It would lead to a lop- sided confederation with resulting instability and resentment. He advised that full union status was a better model, but only at a later date and once it was economically viable. Timing was a key factor in the ensuing events, as the different states of southern Africa were at the time still suspicious and resentful after the last bout of British imperial expansion. The Afrikaners resented the recent annexation of the Transvaal, did not support confederation, and would successfully rebel in the First Boer War. The various Black South African states were also suspicious of this new effort towards British expansion. The ill- advised policies of both Frere and his local ally, John Gordon Sprigg, ended up causing a string of wars across Southern Africa, culminating in the disastrous Anglo- Zulu and Boer Wars. Resistance from the Cape and the Xhosa. In particular, the local Cape government took a non- interventionist approach towards the neighbouring Boer and Black African states of southern Africa. It was also relatively liberal in its domestic politics. Its formal response to Carnarvon's confederation model, conveyed to London via Frere's predecessor Sir Henry Barkly, had originally been that any federation with the illiberal Boer republics would endanger the rights and franchise of the Cape's Black citizens, and was therefore unacceptable. It now resolutely opposed British confederation as being an imperialist attempt to override the Cape's constitution and extend British control over the whole of southern Africa. They also saw that confederation would entail a British invasion of the remaining independent states of the region, such as Zululand and Transvaal, and they correctly predicted war and instability. The summary of Molteno's message was that . In September 1. 87. Cape frontier, between the Mfengu and Gcaleka tribes. The Cape government viewed the dispute as a local police matter, but Frere immediately traveled to the frontier and declared war on the neighbouring independent state of Gcalekaland. Frere saw the dispute as an opportunity to annex Gcalekaland for the planned confederation. Frere also shared Carnarvon's concerns that the continued existence of independent African states posed an ever- present threat of a . The 9th Frontier War resulted. The Transkei. Xhosa were subjugated and annexed early in 1. General Thesiger and a small force of regular and colonial troops. Frere appealed (February 1. British Colonial Office to overthrow the Cape's elected government. He then asked his political ally, Mr John Gordon Sprigg, to form a puppet ministry. This unprecedented move solved his constitutional hindrances in the Cape, but was overshadowed by a growing set of conflicts across Southern Africa and Lord Carnarvon's resignation in early 1. Outbreak of Zulu and Boer Wars. While Carnarvon remained as Colonial Secretary in London the view had support but his replacement, Sir Michael Hicks- Beach strongly wished to avoid any war in southern Africa. Frere nonetheless used the delay in mail between London and Cape Town, to time his letters so as to circumvent the Colonial Office's opposition to war. Frere then sent Cetshwayo an impossible ultimatum in December 1. Cetshwayo was unable to comply with Frere's ultimatum . On 1. 1 January 1. British troops crossed the Tugela River; fourteen days later the disaster of Isandlwana was reported, and that was enough for the House of Commons to demand that Frere be recalled. Beaconsfield supported him, however, and in a strange compromise he was censured but asked to stay on. Frere had severely underestimated the Zulus, whom he had characterized as . The delay in giving the country a constitution afforded a pretext for agitation to the resentful Boers, a rapidly increasing minority, while the defeat at Isandlwana had badly tarnished the reputation of the British Empire in the region. Owing to the Xhosa and Zulu wars, Sir Bartle had been unable to give his undivided attention to the state of things in the Transvaal until April 1. Boers near Pretoria. Though conditions were grim, Frere managed to win the Boers' respect by promising to present their complaints to the British government, and to urge the fulfilment of the promises that had been made to them. The Boers did eventually disperse, on the very day upon which Frere received the telegram announcing the government's censure. On his return to Cape Town, he found that his achievement had been eclipsed. Meanwhile, growing Boer resentment at Frere's policies erupted in December 1. First Boer War. The First Boer War, with the humiliating British defeats at Bronkhorstspruit, Laing's Nek, Schuinshoogte and Majuba Hill led to the independence of the Boer Republics and the final end of Carnarvon's confederation scheme. Outbreak of the Basotho Gun War. However the Cape government had allowed the Basotho leadership to keep much of their traditional authority and independence. As allies and trading partners of the Cape, the Basotho were also well- equipped with firearms. Frere pushed . The Basuto Gun War (1. Basothos rebelled at what they saw as a racist and high- handed ruling. Premier John Gordon Sprigg's unpopular attempt to enforce this disarmament of the Basotho was aggravated by his setting aside of Basotho land for white settlement. Amedeo Voltejo Obici was born on July 1. Pietro Ludovico and Luigia Carolina Sartor Obici at Contrada del Cristo 7 in Oderzo, Italy, which is located in the Treviso Province. Amedeo's father died when he 7 years old, leaving behind his widow, young Amedeo, another son, and daughter. When Amedeo was 1. Vittorio Sartor, Luigia's brother called for Amedeo to come to the United States, where Sartor had emigrated years earlier. Vittorio had moved to Scranton, Pennsylvania with his wife and two children. Young Amedeo departed Le. Havre in March 1. Italian tramp steamer. Unable to speak English, Amedeo has his destination written on a label tied through a buttonhole on his coat. The steamer arrived at the Bush Terminal, Brooklyn, New York. Amedeo took the Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad 6. Scranton. The steamer had arrived early in New York and unaware of his nephew's arrival, his uncle failed to come to the train station to retrieve Amedeo. A policeman found him crying at the station and took him to his uncle's house. For the first three months, Amedeo attended evening classes to learn English and during the day worked for his uncle at the uncle's fruit stand. It is believed that at this point that Amedeo notices the popularity of the peanut as snack food when he saw people eating nuts on the street. He tried to convince his uncle to purchase a roaster so they could sell the nuts as a sideline, but roasters were too expensive. The creative and inventive Amedeo went to a junk yard and purchase a piece of metal and had it rolled into a crude roaster. Amedeo then worked at a cigar factory and as a bellhop in Mc Casey hotel for $1 per week. At 1. 5years old, Amedeo moved to the neighboring town of Wilkes- Barre to work at a fruit stand for $6per month plus board. By 1. 7years old Amedeo was tending bar for Andrew Lynch who was activein local politics. It was during this time that Amedeo assisted Lynch with the solicitation of otherimmigrants to vote for candidates that Lynch supported. Working for Lynch, Amedeo earned $1. Thework was grueling at 1. Amedeo also had to attract attention to his cart and yelledout to the masses. This eventually made him hoarse. He once again used his ingenuity andmanufactured a whistle, which he attached to the steam pipe that roasted the nuts. His continuouswhistle alerted customers and made his job much easier. It was at this point that he and his friend, Mario Peruzzi, who he had met while soliciting for. Andrew Lynch, became partners in Amedeo's endeavor to market the peanut. Amedeo Obici- . Lynch had tasked Obici to travelthrough Luzerne County, Pennsylvania and solicit votes from Italian immigrants. It is during a tripto Hazelton that Obici came upon Peruzzi working for a wholesale grocer. Peruzzi was born in 1. Hazelton with his family in 1. He married in 1. 89. By 1. 90. 6, Peruzzi was working for C. Wentz Company of Scranton as the head of the confectionary department. It was that year that Obici decided the future of his peanut business and with Peruzzi's help the two created a peanut empire, which labeled Obici as . He convinced Peruzzi to obtain a loan for $2. Wentz so the two could form a corporation that sold peanuts. The company name was . Obici liked the name because to him it sounded . The building in which Obici's eating establishment was located became available for sale and Obici was able to obtain a loan to purchase it. He was able to pay the $3. The intention was to sell 3. He discovered that these men pilfered a majority of the profits from the nut business. In an effort to maximize his profits, he decided to move his cleaning and processing plants closer to the farms in Suffolk, Virginia, the location of his largest suppliers. In 1. 91. 3, Obici traveled to Suffolk and purchased a manufacturing facility. He also relocated the manufacturing headquarters to Suffolk. While Suffolk had the manufacturing headquarters, the main offices were still located in Scranton. A 1. 3- year old Suffolk boy, Anthony Gentile, drew a sketch of a . Gentile was awarded his $5 prize and the idea was developed at the Pennsylvania headquarters. There is some question as to whether there may have been some bias in the selection. The Italian community in Suffolk was small and it’s highly unlikely that the Obicis and Gentiles were strangers. Anthony Gentile died of a heart attack when he was just 3. Peanut was used extensively in the marketing of Planters Peanuts. If you are a beginner, you're best bet is to tune up with an electronic tuner, or if you have a good ear already you may be able to tune up using harmonics. I will post more on tuning with harmonics soon. Though I can tune quickly by ear in most situations, I do have to rely on a tuner when crowd noise is a factor or when silence is important in a concert setting. Tuning Mechanics. We call it . Always start with the string below your target pitch and slowly raise the string up to your desired pitch. If you start with the string higher than your target pitch and then tune down to your note, you're going to have problems. Because of the metal- on- metal construction of tuning gears there is inherent . If you tune downward instead of upward, the tuning gears could slip a little resulting in a flat note, and this could happen in the middle of a steel solo! Always tune upward to remove the slack in the tuning gears. Tuning Systems. Okay, now for the fun part. Here's a boiled down version that I hope makes sense to you. For quite a while western music has been based on Equal Temperament—a tuning system based on a 4. A—an invention designed to make all keys sound similar harmonically. Before that, musical instruments were tuned via natural harmonics, the so called 'Just' tuning method, which had a very rich sound but made playing in different keys difficult or impossible. Some instruments, notably the piano, can even be . How does steel guitar play into all this? Steel guitarists generally follow one of the tuning systems just mentioned above. Let's break it down to three schools of thought: 4. Tuning - tuning all your strings to an electronic tuner based on A 4. Equal Temperament). Harmonic or Just Tuning - tuning to the upper harmonics generated by your tuning's primary note (C for a C6th, E for an E7th, etc.). When you tune by this method half the strings are flat to 4. Adjusted Tuning - This is like Harmonic/Just tuning but all the pitches are raised up by a small amount so that the average of all pitches is closer to 4. The Steel Guitar Tuning Dilemma. When you tune your steel guitar strings to 4. Equal Temperament). But when you play a simple major chord by yourself and let it ring, you notice . This is because the chord root generates harmonics in the upper register that can be faintly heard, among them notes that your other fingers are picking. But these natural harmonic tones are slightly flat to the tones you are picking and that's what creates the beats and the sense of being out of tune. Why is this a problem for steel guitar and not the other instruments? This has to do with how the sounds are produced. Pianos and guitars have hammers and frets, which produce a percussive sound. The attack is sharp and then you get a quick drop- off in volume. For this reason, you don't notice conflicts created by the upper harmonics. On steel guitar, you don't have a strong attack since there are no frets, and you often play chords with lots of sustain, which allows the ear to track the upper harmonics. Three Possible Solutions. One solution to this problem is to just ignore it. Tune up to 4. 40 and play right along with the band and hope you blend in. You will if you play lots of single- note stuff and percussive, rapid chords. But if you play long sustaining chords and pads, it may drive you and others crazy. My view is that if your chords have the richness of just tuning, your audience will separate your sound from the stuff other instruments are playing and there won't appear to be a clash. Also, vibrato on the steel tends to mask intonation problems with the rest of the band. I play lots of chords and lots of pads with a fair amount of vibrato, so I feel that tuning to the natural scale (the scale based on natural harmonics) is the way to go for me. Long, sustained chords have a very majestic sound when you are tuned to natural harmonics. The Thirds and Sixths Problem. The biggest conflicts between 4. So in the key of C, the E notes (thirds) and A notes (sixths) are the problem. They will sound sharp if you tune to an electronic tuner. I generally drop these tones 8 to 1. Some players try to compensate for this flatness by shifting the whole tuning up in pitch slightly so that the average pitch is around 4. This is the Adjusted Tuning scheme listed above. It makes sense and works well for a lot of musical situations and playing styles. I have now largely adopted the Adjusted Tuning scheme (see my settings above). The drawback is that no notes will then be exactly in tune. But you'll be closer to your guitar player or keyboard player on average. Other Tuning Factors. Your Band's Instrumentation. There are a host of factors that creep in when you decide on a tuning scheme for your steel guitar. As mentioned, how you play is a factor, how many chords you play and how much sustain and vibrato you use. And your band's instrumentation can be a factor—if you're in a trio with no guitar player or piano player, you're going to have a lot more leeway—you probably won't want to use 4. Keys Favored By Your Band. If your band strongly favors one key over the others, you may want to adjust your tuning scheme. For example, if you use Just Tuning on a C6th, and the band plays frequently in the key of E, those open E notes are going to sound flat if you're doing a lot of hammer- ons and pull- offs on the E strings. It's one thing to have flat thirds and sixths as mentioned above; but if the root of the chord, E in this case, is 1. You could offset this problem if you play a double or triple neck guitar and have an E tuning on board for some of these open string effects—those E notes will be in tune if you use Just Tuning. If you don't have access to an E tuning or don't want to deal with the excessive flattedness of Just Tuning in general, you would probably want to take the Adjusted Tuning approach and raise each string by 3 or 4 cents. Sir Humphrey Appleby: 'You see, the British foreign office has had the same basic goal for at least the last five hundred years, and that is to create a disunited Europe. In that cause, we've fought with the Germans against the French and Spanish, with the Turkish and French against the Russians, and with the French and Russians against the Germans and Italians. It's the old divide and rule, you see, that's why we want to break up the European Union. We tried to break it up from the outside, but that wouldn't work. Now that we're inside we're free to make a complete pig's breakfast of the whole thing. We can set the Spanish against the Germans, the Germans against the French, the French against the Italians. Foreign office is terribly pleased, it's just like old times.'James Hacker: 'But if that's true, why is the foreign office pushing for higher membership?'Sir Humphrey Appleby: 'I'd have thought that was obvious. The more members an organization has, the more arguments it can stir up. The more futile and impotent it becomes.'James Hacker: 'What appalling cynicism.'Sir Humphrey Appleby: 'Yes, minister.
